Eiko Godwin

Eiko Godwin, 92, loved by all as a wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully August 8, 2021, in Kansas City, Missouri. She was born in Tokyo, Japan and moved to the countryside outside Tokyo during WWII. As a young adult she worked at the US military base in the computer room where she met her husband, Jack Godwin. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Godwin, is survived by her daughter Beverly Godwin (Mike Roberts), and her sons, Jack Godwin, Jr. and John Godwin, and one granddaughter, Margo Roberts. As a military wife, Eiko moved from base to base and lived on Tachikawa AFB in Japan, Washington State near Takoma; after another assignment in Japan, they returned to the States living at Travis AFB in Fairfield, CA, and Suitland, MD near Andrews AFB. After the military she lived in Montgomery, AL and in 2008, she moved to Kansas City to be near her daughter and granddaughter. Eiko was an outgoing person and loved hanging out with her friends. Before moving to Kansas City, she was a long time member of Heritage Baptist Church in Montgomery, AL, volunteering and traveling with her church friends. After moving to the KC area, she was involved in activities including a walking group, and hanging out with her neighbors and taking art-related classes. She made good friends wherever she lived and knew how to have fun. She loved spending time with her granddaughter and loved teaching Margo to cook and taking her shopping and especially made a point of attending all of Margo’s theatre performances as long as she was able to do so. She also loved dogs, having a rescue dog whenever she could. Eiko was a talented artist. In her earlier years she made clothes, crocheted and knitted and was an amazing cook. After raising her family, she worked for Sears and used her creativity to create store displays. Long after retirement, in her 80’s, she began making beautiful creations with stained glass and other types of glass art giving it to friends and donating it to charity auctions. She also took up painting and created beautiful works of art by painting. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Sunday, August 29, 2021, 3:00pm, at Belton Memorial Station (602 Maurer Pkwy, Belton, MO 64012). A reception will follow.
