Mary Jo Hughes

Mary Jo Hughes was born on January 8th, 1941 to Bertha and Edward Heiman in St. Benedicts, KS. She was the 2nd youngest of 9 children (8 brothers). She graduated from St. Benedicts High School and went on to the college of nursing at St. Mary’s College in Leavenworth, KS and St. Louis, MO. She graduated and became a registered nurse for many years. She met and was married to Patrick Hughes on December 1st 1962 at St. Peter and St. Paul Catholic Church in Seneca, KS and has been happily married for 57 years. They lived in Seneca for a short time and moved to Kansas City, later ending up in Lee’s Summit, Mo. Her career was very important to her and a point of pride. She was a registered nurse, having a long career at; Sabetha Hospital, Research Hospital, school nurse at Center School District and nurse for Dr. Hugh McCaughey at Menorah Hospital. After retiring from nursing she still had a desire for service and volunteered for many years making beds and serving at the Little Sisters of the Poor retirement home. She was also very active in her church community, being part of the altar society and many other organizations. She is a prayer warrior for Our Lady and was part of a daily Rosary group as well as attending daily mass regularly. Her other passion was her love for her family. She truly was the Matriarch, taking care of us all with her fantastic cooking, baking and especially her Christmas Candy. She was always an avid cheer leader for her children and grandchildren, you knew that she would be there giving them all of the love and support they needed whether it was a sporting event or just a tough spot in life. Being so generous she gave us all the greatest gift she could, the gift of her love and strong faith. A faith so strong, we know she is glorifying our Lord and we will all be back together again. She was proceeded in death by her Mother, Father and brothers Donald, John, Regis, Kenny, Eddie, and Robert as well as her son-in-law Charles Joseph. She is survived by her brothers Paul Heiman and Tom Heiman and many incredible sister-in-law’s. She leaves behind her immediate family husband Patrick, daughter Pam Joseph, son Jeff Hughes and daughter-in-law Michele Hughes. Also she is survived by grandchildren she loved and adored; Patrick Joseph (Jenna), Jessica (Joseph) Lanham (Sean), Blake Hughes, Brett Hughes, Brock Hughes, Bella Hughes and Emily Joseph. Lastly her newest ray of sunshine her great-grandson, Hayes Patrick Joseph. All services to be held at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Lee’s Summit, MO. Sunday, October 27th Rosary at 6:30 followed by visitation till 9:00. We will celebrate her life with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 on Monday, October 28, 2019.
