DeVaughn J. Burrows

DeVaughn passed away peacefully on February 2, 2024 at his home with his daughter by his side. DJ as he was known by his friends was born November 27, 1931 in Bronson KS. He was the second son of Oscar & Buelah Burrows. He met Ada Ruth in their home town of Bronson and soon married her on December 31, 1955. They were later blessed by 3 children, Mark Alan Burrows, Kimberly Ann Cohen and Lisa Noelle Lamons. DJ served in the United State Air Force from 1951-1955 as a firefighter and shared so many stories from his time served and a list of lifelong friends. He moved to the Kansas City area in 1955 and in 1966 to Mission, KS where he lived until his passing. He worked for Universal Appliance Co, American Rug Co, Lawless & Johnson and Home Rug Co as a Union Truck Driver, he retired in 1988. He became a Grandpa in 1983 and at that time he was renamed Papa by his first grandson, Dane. The loving memories that the grandkids have of Papa are numerous. A few of their favorites include when he would take them fishing, garage sales, watching the trains, and always listening to classic country music in his pickup truck. He was always stopping at gas stations to get an Icee for them or McDonalds for some biscuits and gravy-where they would eat in the truck at Shawnee Mission Park. He made the best homemade biscuits and gravy, and it would be cooked very earlier in the morning. He enjoyed playing solitaire and word searches. He has an extensive collection of pocket knives and was always wanting to find a special one or work on making new handles for them. He loved his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren very much and was so proud of them. He is preceded in death by his wife, Ada Ruth, parents Oscar & Beulah Burrows, daughter Kimberly Cohen, grandson Tyler Burrows & brother Dwaine Burrows. He leaves behind his son Mark and wife Laura of Lenexa, KS, his loving daughter Lisa and husband Scott of Shawnee, KS. 6 grandchildren, Dane Cohen and wife Cassie of Topeka, KS, Emily Burrows and husband Jason of Olathe, KS, Seth Cohen and wife Paige of Shawnee, KS, Beau “Brahms” Cohen and wife Chelsea of Prairie Village, KS, Max Lamons of Shawnee, KS, Madeline Lamons and fiancée Grant Stewart of Lawrence, KS. Nine great grandchildren, Sulliven Cohen, Noah Fenton, Quinn Burrows, Greyson & Hudson Cohen, Sedona Stewart, Oliver Cohen, Teahen Cohen & Oslo Stewart. A host of nieces, nephews and other family member and friends. Also, all of his special grand dogs and chickens. A special thank you to his home health nurse Chanelle, for all her support and care over the years. The family will be having a small celebration of life at a later date.
